Systems Administrator

Reports To:  Information Technology Manager


The primary role of the System Administrator is to ensure efficiency and security of the Bates Information Technology infrastructure. Troubleshoots system issues and regularly monitors and tunes appropriate systems to ensure optimum level of performance. Installs and configures software, hardware, and data networks and maintains upgrades. Collects and analyzes system data and develops capacity plans for enterprise-wide systems. A key member of the Information Technology staff, this position supports the Information Technology Manager and assists in completing special projects.


  • Manage Active Directory users and groups, Group Policy configuration, file / print services, access controls / permissions and Remote Desktop servers environments
  • Migrate non-supported, end-of-life and near-end-of-life systems to supported platforms
  • Manage system infrastructure (physical and virtual servers, storage servers, other) and ensure the security of system and data through backups, firewalls, and access controls
  • Manage asset inventory and licenses
  • Assist with user support when needed and train staff on latest tools and technologies
  • Set up workstations and accounts
  • Assist with in-house developed application support
  • Manage mobile device management
  • Oversee, recommend, and implement appropriate level database solutions and enhancements to ensure an improvement in system reliability and performance
  • Develop and maintain a library of system-supporting processes and procedure documents
  • Maintains and updates IT policies, technical documentation, and manuals
  • Assists with vendor risk assessments and information technology audits (e.g. SOC2)
  • Identify and automate inefficient processes
  • Provide phone support to remote users

Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or other related fields
  • Professional certification such as MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) is a bonus
  • 3 years of experience in a client-server environment, preferably as a Network Administrator, System Administrator or any other similar role in a reputable firm
  • Experience with cloud migration would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of various platforms and operating systems, especially Windows, Mac OS, Linux and SAS
  • Experience with Windows server and workstation operating systems, Active Directory / Group Policy and  Exchange Server, administration
  • Experience with patch, databases as well as networks (LAN, WAN) management
  • Experience in creating scripts in Perl, Python or other languages
  • Expert-level knowledge of data backup/recovery and system security such as intrusion detection systems
  • Experience working with complex system implementations and organizational processes
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and work with multiple technologies
