Alejandro Mercado-Martínez

Alejandro Mercado is a Bates Group affiliate expert based in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. A pioneer in the field of e-discovery in Puerto Rico, for the past ten years Mr. Mercado has contributed to the advancement of electronic discovery competence in the bar by designing and teaching the first course of its kind as an adjunct professor at two of the island’s major law schools. As part of this effort, Mr. Mercado has also contributed in setting the standard for Continued Legal Education seminars in the area of e-discovery and assisted judges in understanding and confronting the challenges that arise as a result of electronic discovery in litigation by participating as a guest lecturer for the Puerto Rico Judicial Academy of the P.R. Office of Courts Administration.

After obtaining his LLM in E-Discovery and Computer Privacy at Columbia University in the city of New York, Mr. Mercado obtained the designation of “Certified Information Privacy Professional” by the International Association of Privacy Professionals in Europe and the United States, becoming the first attorney in Puerto Rico as per the IAPP with said qualifications.

On March 1, 2013, he joined the offices of Adsuar Muñiz Goyco Seda & Pérez-Ochoa P.S.C. in Puerto Rico to become the firm’s Head of Data Privacy, Cybersecurity & Information Management Group. He maintains a broad practice in general civil and commercial matters and focuses in advising and rendering assistance to clients in issues relating to e-discovery and data privacy including, but not limited to, collecting, reviewing and producing electronically stored information; drafting e-discovery protocols and selecting electronic discovery vendors and technology assisted review tools; sharing personally identifiable information for commercial purposes; implementing e-contracting procedures; cross border transfers; data collection; and management practices of employee data. His practice also involves advising clients on federal and state security and data breach notification regulations and laws, securing enterprises in a privacy responsible manner upon closing of operations, drafting privacy policies and providing expert interpretation and advise on federal and state privacy laws and regulations, including but not limited to, TCPA, GLBA, COPPA, FACTA, FCRA and CFAA.

Mr. Mercado is a trained mediator by the American Arbitration Association and a fellow member of the world’s only directory of qualified discovery neutrals, the American College of e-Neutrals (“ACESIN”).
