Shane D. Shook, PhD/MBA

Dr. Shane Shook is an Independent and Affiliate Consulting and Testifying Expert with Bates Group of Lake Oswego, Oregon, working out of Santa Cruz, CA.  Dr. Shook provides critical analysis and reporting, including testimony, in cases involving information management and governance, and business technology issues for several industries, particularly including financial services, health care and information technology.

Since 1986, his work has included testimony in high profile cases or projects involving securities and financial fraud, transfer pricing for software and hardware and related operations, source code licensing and intellectual property protection (or theft), competitive market/operational strategies of industry-use technology, patent research and review, outsource IT advisory negotiation and dispute analysis, and data security/privacy (including intrusion/extrusion and identity theft).

He also has substantial experience in litigation consulting (preparedness and response) with companies and law firms. This includes discovery requests, deposition support, and computer/communications forensics. Dr. Shook has contributed to several technical standards in financial services, information technology and communications, and risk management organizations.

He has provided expert testimony on technical issues in criminal, class action, IRS, SEC, EPA, and ITC cases, as well as state and federal administrative matters. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and has been interviewed by financial industry periodicals in the US, UK, and Japan concerning computer disaster recovery and application security practices in banking and financial services.
