Terry Long

Terry Long is an affiliate expert for Bates Group, where he uses his extensive background in the securities industry to consult and provide expert witness testimony on regulatory compliance and supervisory issues related to broker dealers and registered investment advisers.

Mr. Long has a seasoned background in multiple financial/investment areas including REITS, TICs, Direct Participation Programs, options, annuities, municipal bonds, initial public offerings, over-the-counter stock trading, limited partnerships, and mortgage-backed securities.  He has a proven ability to contribute significant financial acumen and industry experience toward activity supporting attorneys in defending financial advisers and firms during legal proceedings, up to and including arbitration hearings.  He possesses an exemplary blend of analytical, organizational, communication and public speaking skills.

Prior to joining Bates Group, Mr. Long was with Smith Barney for 20 years in varying roles from Financial Adviser to Senior Vice President/Branch Manager.  Mr. Long achieved and maintained top ranking throughout his tenure for new accounts, assets under management and commissions earned.  He was consistently the #1 producer among 36 trainees and #1 during his entire career among the original hiring group.  Mr. Long generated $1M+ in commissions and fees in three separate production years resulting in a promotion to Senior Vice President.  He directly and in partnership managed over $250M in client assets for institutions and high net worth individuals. 

Mr. Long has sold and supervised sales of a variety of mortgage backed products to a range of institutional clients.  These accounts included small banks, credit unions, money managers, pensions, family offices and high net worth individuals.  He has extensive interactive experience with New York-based marketing teams and has made joint presentations across a broad geographic spectrum of the United States and Canada.

Mr. Long managed daily business operations at two branches consisting of 60 brokers collectively and oversaw staffing, training, regulatory compliance, client contact and activity review, and P&L management. He performed extensive suitability and supervisory analysis on a broad range of in-branch accounts and conducted, in concert with New York-based compliance officers, discussions with brokers and clients designed to reduce or eliminate firm exposure to possible or pending litigation.

Mr. Long has strong leadership experience gained from mentoring, motivating and managing 60+ financial advisers at two Smith Barney branches.  He diligently monitored customer accounts including frequent phone or written contact and proactively implemented solutions to detect and prevent abuse and/or inappropriate activity.

Concurrent with his career at Smith Barney, Mr. Long founded in 1989, Canyon Properties, LLC which specialized in buying and subsequently partitioning rural acreages in Central Oregon. His firm gained a reputation as being able to navigate Oregon’s increasingly complex land use laws and consulted on several projects which previously had been unable to obtain partition approval. Canyon Properties, LLC also accomplished extensive 1031 Exchanges for its' own properties and those of clients, including use of a Reverse Starker Exchange, which was a groundbreaking technique at the time.
